Il nuovo trattamento è nelle prime fasi di sviluppo, ma un giorno potrebbe essere testato anche sull’uomo, per patologie come obesità e diabete e per la perdita muscolare legata all’età .
La ricerca arriva mentre farmaci come Ozempic hanno cominciato a imprimere una svolta sul fronte della riduzione dell’appetito, aiutando il trattamento di queste malattie metaboliche. Ma il nuovo farmaco, noto come SLU-PP-332, non influisce sull’appetito o sull’assunzione di cibo. Né induce i topi a fare più esercizio. Semplicemente stimola un percorso metabolico naturale che in genere risponde all’esercizio e fa agire il corpo come se si stesse allenando per una maratona, portando a un aumento del dispendio energetico e a un metabolismo più veloce dei grassi nel corpo.
“Questo composto dice al muscolo scheletrico di apportare gli stessi cambiamenti che si vedono durante l’allenamento di resistenza”, afferma Thomas Burris, che ha guidato la ricerca sul nuovo farmaco mirato a un gruppo di proteine note come Err, responsabili dell’attivazione di alcune delle più importanti vie metaboliche nei tessuti che divorano energia come i muscoli, il cuore e il cervello.

E gli animali iniziano a perdere peso”. I risultati dello studio, condotto con ricercatori della Washington University di St. Louis e della St. Louis University, sono pubblicati sul ‘Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics’. Trattare i topi obesi 2 volte al giorno per un mese ha fatto sì che guadagnassero 10 volte meno grasso rispetto ai topi non trattati e perdessero il 12% del loro peso corporeo. Eppure continuavano a mangiare la stessa quantità di cibo e non facevano più esercizio.
In un altro lavoro che il laboratorio di Burris sta per pubblicare, i ricercatori hanno trovato evidenze del fatto che il composto possa anche trattare l’insufficienza cardiaca nei topi rafforzando il muscolo cardiaco. Finora il farmaco non ha generato effetti collaterali gravi.
