Che Jannik Sinner fosse un altro rispetto alla semifinale giocata a Wimbledon e persa 3-0 appena sei mesi fa si sapeva, ma che il 22enne altoatesino fosse capace di reggere con Nole in una semifinale Slam dominandolo almeno per due set ecco, forse non era immaginabile. Sarebbe potuta finire molto peggio per il serbo, capace di allungare il match al quarto set dopo che Jannik non aveva sfruttato un match point al tie break del terzo. Strapazzato per i primi due set, Nole ha reagito con tutto quello che aveva nel terzo, ma Sinner è stato impeccabile nel non farsi travolgere e reagire immediatamente andando a prendersi la partita al quarto. Sinner apre il match tenendo il servizio iniziale e sfruttando i 4 errori di Djokovic, evidentemente ancora freddo. Il serbo non ingrana e concede subito una palla break all’avversario: l’azzurro chiude il game con un rovescio vincente, 2-0. Il numero 1 del mondo continua a sbagliare da fondo, senza trovare la misura negli scambi che viaggiano già ad un ritmo forsennato (3-0). Djokovic resta a galla nel primo set annullando una palla break che avrebbe chiuso di fatto il set e conquista il primo game (3-1). Sinner non trova la prima palla con continuità (sotto il 60%) ma non paga dazio e non stecca (4-1). Djokovic non c’è, continua a sbagliare (15 errori non forzati) e subisce un altro break che consente a Sinner di volare verso un agevole 6-1. Il copione non cambia in avvio di secondo set. Sinner è un martello, mentre il rovescio di Djokovic va fuori misura a ripetizione. Nel terzo game, il numero 4 del mondo si procura 2 palle break: Nole sbaglia ancora e si ritrova sotto (1-2). L’azzurro va come un treno (4-2) e ha a disposizione il colpo del k.o. nel secondo set quando Djokovic concede un’altra palla break, con l’ennesimo errore di rovescio (14 errori gratuiti nel secondo set), sul 2-4. Sinner non sfrutta l’opportunità ma è bravissimo a costruirsi la seconda chance e a concretizzarla: 2-5. L’azzurro non trema, l’ottavo game è forse il più complicato tra quelli giocati al servizio: Djokovic lotta ma è impreciso, non arriva alla palla break e cede 6-2. Sinner è avanti 2-0 dopo 1h12′ di monologo. L’azzurro prova ad azzannare subito il terzo set e si procura una palla break nel primo game, con la possibilità di spaccare la partita definitivamente. Djokovic, spalle al muro, si salva. Nel quarto game, sotto 1-2, Sinner vive il primo momento critico dell’incontro. Sotto 0-30, l’azzurro rialza la testa con un provvidenziale ace e poi capitalizza gli errori dell’avversario (2-2). Djokovic inizia a trovare gli angoli e i colpi vincenti aumentano: per il serbo, dopo un’ora e mezza alle corde, diventa più semplice tenere il servizio (3-2). Si procede senza strappi, con i giocatori al servizio in controllo. E’ sorprendente, almeno in parte, se si considera che Sinner nel terzo set deve ricorrere alla seconda palla una volta su due. Non ci sono opportunità per il break, Djokovic evita guai nell’undicesimo game, che richiede 10 punti. Si va al tie-break. Sinner parte male (0-2), recupera il mini-break e torna in carreggiata (2-2) prima del nuovo strappo di Djokovic (2-4). L’azzurro riesce a chiudere nuovamente il gap (4-4) e con 3 punti di fila passa a condurre (5-4) e si procura un match-point (6-5) che Djokovic annulla (6-6) in uno scambio che lascia più di un rimpianto all’italiano. Il serbo si salva, mette la freccia e chiude 8-6: il terzo set è suo, match riaperto. Il quarto set inizia all’insegna delle chance non sfruttate dall’azzurro. Sinner nel secondo game ha a disposizione 3 palle break non consecutive per dare una spallata all’incontro. Il numero 1 del mondo rimane aggrappato alla partita e si salva ancora (1-1). Nel quarto game, la svolta. Djokovic, avanti 40-0, si infila in un tunnel. Tre errori gratuiti, un doppio fallo, un altro errore: Sinner ringrazia e mette a segno il break che gli permette di spezzare l’equilibrio (3-1) e allungare (4-1). Il numero 4 del mondo sceglie il momento giusto per un game a zero e si porta sul 5-2. Sinner non trema, chiude 6-3: Djokovic va ko, Jannik è in finale all’Australian Open.
